Lady Gaga is taking her fish out of water routine to a whole new level.

In a new fashion short, the singer reprises the role of her mermaid alter-ego Yüyi, which appears in her "You and I" music video.

The two-and-ahalf-minute clip, directed by fashion photographers Inez and Vinoodh, is the third of six behind-the-scene videos Gaga has created in conjunction with her latest single. The previous two highlighted her Nymph and Bride characters from "You and I."

In this one, Gaga -- sporting gills on her neck and shoulders -- squirms around in a director's chair wrapped in seaweed and smoking a cigarette.

The scene goes back and forth to another where she's being carried from her trailer to a Nebraska farm, where most of "You and I" was filmed.

"It's like she really gives so much," director Inez told MTV. "Sometimes we were shooting, it was like 3 a.m., and she's been on set forever and still you get an incredible performance — full of fire."

Gaga's fashion stylist Nicola Formichetti, who briefly appears in the film, premiered the video Tuesday night in New York City at his pop-up shop, Nicola's.

In July, Gaga drew the ire of Bette Midler after she performed as a mermaid in a wheelchair -- the same character, Delores Delago, Midler debuted back in the '80s.
