A 13-month-old girl in Ohio suffocated to death after she was left in a baking hot car for more than four hours by a babysitter, police said.
Akron tot Aolani McCray was pronounced dead at a children's hospital on Friday afternoon after sitters at a daycare center discovered her unconscious in an SUV parked outside in sweltering temperatures.
Cops told the Akron Beacon Journal that the baby was left in the van by a daycare center worker who had driven five children to the center, but mistakenly only brought four inside.
The unidentified sitter arrived at the center at around 9:30 a.m. She didn't discover baby Aolani's body until she came out of the house again at around 1:55 p.m., police said.
Police Capt. Dan Zampelli told the Beacon Journal that she appears to have died from heat exhaustion.
"As we do with every sudden death, we always investigate," Zampelli said, adding that the 30-year-old sitter has not been charged with a crime.
Families picking their kids up from the center on Friday afternoon didn't comment to reporters, but a neighbor who lives down the street described the couple who runs the center as “the nicest people [you] would ever want to meet."
"I think they've been running a day-care center for at least 10 years — and doing a great job," the neighbor told the Beacon Journal.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Akron on Friday due to 90-degree heat and skyrocketing humidity that made it feel well over 100.
