The latest bargaining chip in the ongoing battle between Windows and Apple just may be Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
Beginning on May 22, college students (and soon-to-be college students) can now get a free 4GB Xbox 360 when they purchase a Windows 7 PC or laptop. The laptop or desktop will need to cost at least $699, and purchasers need to provide proof that they are students, using an .edu email address if they make their purchase online, or showing a student ID if they buy their computer in a store.
Microsoft announced the arrangement on its website on Thursday, and the deal will last until Sept. 3 or as long as supplies last.
Not a bad enticement, really. The giveaway 360 retails for $200, features WiFi and comes with a controller. Just keep in mind that students – or their heretofore unsuspecting parents – will still have to shell out some dough to make take full advantage of the sleek black unit. That 4GB hard drive doesn’t hold much in terms of video or downloadable games, and an Xbox Live Gold membership – the only way to play opponents online – has a recurring monthly fee attached to it.
Still, it’s a free Xbox, right? And it’s not as if Apple’s giving an iPod to anyone who picks up a MacBook.
