Holiday shopping season - 7 tips to beat buyer's remorse

SENDER: "Dominguez, Robert"

It's easy to overspend when you’re caught up in the spirit of holiday shopping.

It’s even easier to do so without a budget in place, and come January, when the rent is due and credit card bills start piling up, you’ll be suffering from more than a hangover.

This can easily be avoided, though. Not only should you evaluate your finances and assign a strict budget for spending on gifts and seasonal extras, you should learn to avoid common purchase pitfalls that land many shoppers in holiday-buying remorse.

1) Tempting sales signs that lead to impulse buys

Just as important as a budget is knowing what you plan to buy every time you enter a store. This will keep you from overspending on unnecessary items.

Make a list and go over it twice before checking out, to avoid impulse buys. Don’t let sale signs tempt you into spending more than you planned.

2 )Overlooking return/exchange policies

When the shopping gets going, we forget to read return and exchange policies, which can lead to sticky situations and a waste of money.

While some stores extend their return-policy period, most require a gift receipt and may only allow in-store exchanges.

There are also retailers that charge a restocking fee, so it’s always important to read or ask a sales clerk about the return policies before making a purchase.

3) Falling for misleading markdowns

Some retailers have been known to inflate original prices of merchandise to make markdowns look like a better value. Do your homework and research prices of specific goods you plan to buy so you don’t get fooled by false discounts.

4) Missing coupons

Retailers release coupons throughout the holiday season. Be sure not to overlook added discounts, be they from circulars, social media and even your mobile device.

Download CouponSherpa’s free mobile coupon app to get in-store coupons on your phone so you never miss out.

5) Not pricing the competition

Retailers are in fierce competition mode, which means they’re fighting for sales and using various gimmicks to win you over.

Stores have beefed up price-matching policies and some, like Sears and Home Depot, not only guarantee to match the lower price at another store, they will give you an added 10% off.

Though this is great for saving money, you need to do your homework, otherwise you could end up overpaying for an item that’s cheaper next door.

6) Don’t assume discounts are applied

Many retailers hire seasonal sale clerks to help with the holiday shopping rush. Many may not be ready to take on the masses, and checkout mistakes can occur.

Always review your receipt to ensure discounts were applied so that you don’t overspend.

7) Filling up on cheap checkout-aisle extras

There’s a reason checkout aisles are stocked with cheap goods: It’s the retailer’s last chance to get you to spend more before leaving the store.

Those inexpensive items are much more tempting when priced under $10. During busy shopping days, many shoppers sift through the stash while waiting in long lines.

However, purchasing a few of such extras at every store is a quick way to rachet up your holiday bill.

Black Friday looks to be a bigger deal than ever - Stores across the country will likely be packed with plenty more bargain hunters this year

It was a 4 a.m. rush hour for most Black Friday shoppers last year.

Black Friday shoppers, get ready to sharpen those elbows.

Stores across the country will likely be packed with plenty more bargain hunters on this year’s big holiday-season buying weekend, according to a new survey by the National Retail Federation.

With a growing number of major retailers planning to open earlier than ever on Black Friday — midnight on Nov. 25, which will mark the official start of the holiday shopping season — stores and malls will have up to 10% more frenzied consumers than last year jamming aisles and looking for great deals, the NRF said.

Up to 152 million people plan to shop the weekend after Thanksgiving, either at stores or online — about 14 million more than the 138 million who planned to do so in 2010.

“We are fully expecting Black Friday to be a very big day for shoppers this year,” said National Retail Federation spokeswoman Kathy Grannis .

“Typically in an economic downturn, shoppers look to this weekend to really make a dent in their holiday shopping lists because the deals are so good, and the midnight openings are a direct result of retailers responding to consumer demand,” Grannis said.

Several national chains with New York-area stores, including Best Buy, Macy’s, Target and Kohl’s, are letting customers in at midnight for the first time rather than the 4 or 5 a.m. Black Friday openings of the past.

Toys “R” Us and Wal-Mart are opening even earlier — 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., respectively, on Thanksgiving night.

The survey also found that shoppers are increasingly using social media sites to hunt for bargains. More than 17% will monitor retailers’ Facebook pages, while 11.3% will visit group-buying deal sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial.

Erectile dysfunction risk seen in men who take several medications

The more medications a man took, the more likely he was to experience erectile dysfunction, according to a recent study.

The more medications a man took, the more likely he was to experience erectile dysfunction, according to a recent study.

Erectile dysfunction may not just be a fact of aging — it may have to do with how many medications you’re taking.

The more medications a man took, the more likely he was to experience erectile dysfunction, according to a study published in the British Journal of Urology.

In fact, taking multiple medications put a man at higher risk of ED than old age.

Some medications, including beta blockers, anti-depressants and other anxiety medications have already been shown to cause sexual side effects.

A study of men from Southern California took prescription drugs as well as over-the-counter medications into account when asking them about their erectile dysfunction.

Researchers discovered that the more medications a man took, the more severe his ED was likely to be.

About 30% of men taking 10 or more medications had severe ED, compared with just 6.9% of patients who took two or fewer medications.

“We don’t recognize how much these medications do effect subtle changes in ED,” Dr. Andrew Kramer, a urologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, told MSNBC. “And even slight changes in erectile function can have an impact on a man’s sexual activity.

“It doesn’t take much for a guy to notice ED.”

Researchers are recommending that doctors talk to their patients about how many medications they’re taking before handing out prescriptions for Viagra.

Sexually transmitted diseases seen among bisexual and gay black men is raising high

While syphilis rates fell 1.6% from 2009 to 2010, the rate among young black men rose 134% since 2006, according to the recently released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While syphilis rates fell 1.6% from 2009 to 2010, the rate among young black men rose 134% since 2006, according to the recently released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Of the 19 million people that were diagnosed this year with a sexually transmitted disease, one population has been hit the hardest — young, gay and bisexual black men.

While syphilis rates fell 1.6% from 2009 to 2010, the rate among young black men rose 134% since 2006, according to the recently released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

HIV infections are also spiking within this population.

St. Louis Health Director Pam Walker told CBS News KMOX that of the 400 new cases of gonorrhea and 126 new cases of chlamydia she’s been seeing, 90% are African-Americans between the ages of 15 and 24.

Walker believes online meetups are a serious culprit.

“You don’t have to spend a week in a bar to find somebody you’re comfortable with,” she said, “People are doing it online and they’re doing it faster.”

Across all populations, the rate of chlamydia has steadily increased to 1.3 million cases in 2010.

Researchers believe the rise is due to better screening and more patients being propertly diagnosed.

Blacks and Hispanics are more affected by STDs than whites. This is likely due to social and economic factors — such as low income and lack of access to health care.

Half of sexually transmitted diseases are being spread among the young, according to the CDC.

Young people represent 25% of sexually active people in the U.S. but account for nearly half of new STD cases.

Treating sexually transmitted diseases costs the U.S. $17 billion annually.

Tea made from panda feces expected to be most expensive brew in the world

Pandas snack on bamboo, which contains an element that can prevent cancer.

The world’s most expensive cup of tea is packed with cancer-fighting elements, but it’s not without a stomach-turning catch — the tea leaves get a boost from panda feces.

Wildlife expert An Yashi is launching the special blend of green tea, which could cost up to $36,000 per pound, Australia’s SBC.com reported.

Yashi, a college lecturer at Sinchuan University, said using panda excrement to fertilize the tea plants has a health-promoting upside because it contains nutrients from one of the bear’s favorite meals — bamboo.

“Pandas have a very poor digestive system and only absorb about 30 percent of everything they eat: that means their excrement is rich in fibers and nutrients,” said Yashi, noting that those nutrients make their way into the tea through the fertilization process.

“Just like green tea, bamboo contains an element that can prevent cancer — and enhance green tea’s anti-cancer effects — if it is used as fertilizer for the tea.”

Yashi, who collects the dung at a panda breeding center in southern China, said he hopes the tea will snag him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records once it’s released.

But he’s not the first to use feces to fertilize tea plants. Kopi Luwak, the world’s most expensive coffee, is made from droppings of the Indonesian civet cat.

Women suffer quicker brain damage from alcohol abuse: study

Women suffer a 50-percent reduction in the so-called serotonin function in their brain after four years of excessive drinking.

Women suffer a 50-percent reduction in the so-called serotonin function in their brain after four years of excessive drinking.

Women alcoholics suffer damage to the part of their brain that controls moods, impulses and sleep three times faster than their male counterparts, a Swedish study showed Wednesday.

Women suffer a 50-percent reduction in the so-called serotonin function in their brain after four years of excessive drinking, while men show the same amount of damage after 12 years of alcohol abuse, according to the study by researchers at Gothenburg University.

"The impairment is progressing much faster in women," explained Kristina Berglund, who conducted the study with colleagues from the university's Department of Psychology, as well as two researchers at the faculty of Health Sciences, known as the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Serotonin is a brain neurotransmitter that is. among other things. critical to the development and treatment of depression and chronic anxiety.

It also regulates impulse control and our ability to fall asleep and stay awake.

The researchers studied several brain functions of 42 people -- a third of them women -- who admitted to alcohol dependency, along with 28 control subjects.

"We saw that the alcohol dependent individuals had significantly lower serotonin functions," Berglund told AFP.

The women tested said they on average had been drinking the equivalent of about 12 bottles of wine a week for four years, while the men had been drinking the same amount, but for 12 years.

However, "we could see the damage to the serotonin function was equal between men and women," Berglund said.

The results, which are scheduled to be published in the journal of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research in January, had come as a partial surprise to the researchers, she said.

"We were not surprised to find that the serotonin function was impaired in the alcohol-dependent individuals, but we were surprised to see that women were so much more vulnerable, even in the brain," she said.

Ulf Berggren, one of the Sahlgrenska Academy contributors to the study, meanwhile stressed that while the timing was different, men ultimately suffered the same degree of harm to their serotonin function as women.

The study authors acknowledged more research was needed, especially since they had used such a small number of test subjects.

Berglund also said that while the researchers had connected significant serotonin function harm to alcohol abuse, they still needed to look at the psychological impact of the damage.

"We know this function is significantly impaired, but what does this mean? What are the consequences? That's a question that needs answering," she said.

Consumers shun 'diet' foods in favor of 'zero' and 'smart'

Consumers are getting tired of 'diet' foods and seeking foods with positive messages that deliver more.

Consumers are getting tired of 'diet' foods and seeking foods with positive messages that deliver more.

The term 'diet' on food labels has become increasingly unpopular over the years, with consumers drawn more towards products for the ingredients they contain, rather than what they don’t contain, heard attendees of a virtual weight management conference.

Words like 'zero' and 'smart' are replacing terms like 'low-calorie' and 'low-fat' in labels by savvy marketers, said Tom Vierhile, director of Datamonitor in the US, who noted that the number of new products featuring the word 'diet' has plummeted in the last five years.

"Avoidance-type claims are becoming less popular," Vierhile said. "We’re seeing a big drop in the use of words like diet and dieting and companies are using words like zero which carry less baggage," reported industry publication FoodNavigator-USA which hosted the webinar last week.

A protein shake developed especially for people living with diabetes was used as one example of a successful product and marketing campaign.

Glucerna Hunger Smart Shakes have 15g of protein to help manage hunger and are made with Carb Steady, slowly digestible carbohydrates designed to help minimize blood sugar spikes.

The shakes also contain fiber, 25 vitamins and minerals, and picolinate to help the body’s insulin work more efficiently.

Unlike diet foods, the protein shake is sold on the principle of what the product can do for the consumer, rather than for the ingredients it lacks.

The rising interest in what the industry calls functional foods -- foods that come with health claims -- is prompting companies to come up with a variety of products that pull double duty: satisfy taste buds and deliver a health benefit. While vitamin D-fortified foods like orange juice and milk have become mainstream, cereal manufacturers like Kellogg’s in the UK and bread makers are also adding the vitamin into their products. Artery-cleaning foods have also been touted as the next big trend in functional foods.

Similarly, sales of portion-controlled foods like 100-calorie packs have begun to slow, which will force companies to seek out other weight-management solutions, Vierhile said.

Other ingredients that hold promise in the world of weight management products include Satisfit, a soluble methyl cellulose which forms a gel mass in the stomach and has been shown to linger there for two hours to help with satiety.

Okara is another high-protein, high-fiber pulp which has also been shown to help people feel full longer.

Congress pushes back on healthier school lunches

Congress is pushing back against the Obama administration's attempt to make school lunches healthier.

Congress is pushing back against the Obama administration's attempt to make school lunches healthier.

Congress is unraveling the Obama administration's attempt to make school lunches healthier, pushing back against Agriculture Department efforts to limit french fries and pizzas, reduce sodium and boost whole grains on school lunch lines.

A spending bill released late Monday would force the department to drop an attempt to limit servings of potatoes per week, delay proposed limits on sodium and delay a requirement to boost whole grains. The department proposed the standards earlier this year.

The spending bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. The department's proposed guidelines would have attempted to prevent that.

The changes had been requested by food companies that produce frozen pizzas, the salt industry and potato growers.
