David Lavau plunged his car 200 feet off a dangerous mountain road last week.
A 67-year-old man survived nearly six days in the bottom of a ravine by eating leaves and bugs and drinking water from a nearby creek, his daughter said.
David Lavau plunged his car 200 feet off a dangerous mountain road last week into the remote area in Castic, Calif., and survived on the makeshift food for nearly a week before family members found him Thursday.
Lavau's daughter Lisa said her family reported him missing days earlier and began searching the area after authorities said their father had used his debit card at a nearby store.
"We know our dad. My dad would never not call his kids," she told CBS2. "There's four of us, and just by the time that fourth day, the fifth day and then the sixth day, we knew something was wrong."
Lavau drove up with her daughter and four other family members to search for their dad.
"I live in San Francisco, so I drove up with my daughter and I said, 'If anybody can find our dad, it's us. We know he's alive."
And so, we stopped at every ravine and looked over every hill," she said. "And then my brother got out of the car and we kept screaming and the next thing, we heard Dad say, 'Help, help!' and there he was."
Firefighters helped the three family who found their stranded dad get out of the remote area, CBS reported.
On Friday morning, David Lavau was listed in stable condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, Calif. Lisa Lavau told CBS he had multiple rib fractures, a dislocated shoulder, a broken arm and multiple fractures in his back.
"He's in a great deal of pain and he's very dehydrated and very hungry," Dr. Garrett Sutter told reporters.
He was said to be in good spirits.
Chardonnay Lavau said on the "Today Show" that one of the first things her father asked for was a chocolate malt.
"He loves his Frosty Freeze," she said.
