Don't feel too much pressure to come up with original Christmas gifts this year - what Americans want most is cold, hard cash.
Consumer Reports poll found that money is the most sought-after stocking stuffer this holiday season, followed closely by electronics and gift cards.
"You can't fault consumers for focusing on the fundamentals," said Todd Marks, shopping expert for Consumer Reports.
"Cash makes a great gift because people can buy something they really need or really want."
The most-wanted gadgets are video games, iPads and digital cameras. The least popular: family photos and perfume.
Consumers getting a jump on holiday shopping in Times Square said whatever they end up buying, they just hope it's on sale.
"I think electronics like iPods and iPhones are too expensive to give as gifts," said Roger Werkhoven, 42, who is more likely to give clothes.
"I'll probably give money or gift cards," said Charmayne Roberts, 50, of Queens. "I'm also trying to find a laptop for my son."
Andrea Arce, 24, of Manhattan, said she planned to give away some electronics and clothes. But that's not what she wants to open on Christmas Day.
"I hope I get money," she said.
