Puppypalooza! Dog in Germany Gives Birth to 17 Puppies

BERLIN -- A dog in Germany has given birth to 17 puppies, leaving their owner thrilled but fatigued after having to feed them with a bottle for several weeks because their mother couldn't cope with the demand.

Owner Ramona Wegemann said Monday she barely slept for more than a couple of minutes without interruption during about four weeks in an "exhausting" struggle to make sure all of the purebred Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies would survive.

She said when she was "finished feeding the last puppy, the first was hungry again."

Wegemann's dog Etana gave birth to eight female and nine male puppies on Sept. 28 in Ebereschenhof, which is near Berlin.

Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies look out of their box on Germany. These cuties are among the 17 puppies born Sept. 28-29 to Etana, a Rhodesian Ridgeback belonging to Ramona Wegemann.
At least five times a day, Wegemann gave the dogs a bottle with special milk because their mother's nipples could have never coped with the demand, and when the puppies were not hungry, they wanted to be entertained, she said.

Wegemann said when dogs give birth to so many puppies several of them die within the first week. "But all of our puppies survived. This is incredible and wonderful," the 32-year-old added.

It was the second time that Etana gave birth. She gave birth to eight puppies in her first pregnancy, not uncommon for the dog's breed, Wegemann said.

"The birth of the puppies was very special. All puppies were born naturally, no cesarean was necessary," she added. It took Etana a full 26 hours to give birth to all of the puppies - and Wegemann was as baffled as amazed.

But caring for 17 puppies turned out to be a full-time job: Wegemann put her work as an independent animal psychiatrist on a hold and her husband took as much vacation as he could.

Their lives have been turned upside down by the puppies, and their living room is now occupied by a giant box that houses the puppies.

But even Wegemann still struggles to recognize them: The females puppies are called Bahati, Binta, Bahya, Bashima, Batouuli, Binki, Bora, Bisa and the male ones are Baakir, Banjoku, Belay, Bruk, Bundu, Bayo, Bukekayo, Biton and Bulus.

Wegemann gave them all African names because the Rhodesian Ridgeback is an African hunting dog. Wegeman and her husband now plan to give most of the puppies away.

A price of 800 euros ($1,050) per puppy would only cover the expenses for the veterinary, vaccinations, food and the mandatory paperwork, Wegemann said. She hopes to get about 1,000 euros ($1,315) per dog, but said they would only give them to families with children, not breeders.

Four of the puppies have been sold, two more are already paid for and will leave their siblings shortly.

SHOUT OUT SUNDAY #50

Flirting Social Network Likealittle Hits 20M Pageviews In 6 Weeks

If you were paying attention to Hacker News this weekend, you may have seen both the following post advertising “YC W11 Startup Social Network, 20M Pageviews in 6 Wks, Hiring Hackers/Designers” and the subsequent thread trying to determine which startup it was both go popular within hours of each other.
Since the job post, amateur and not so amateur Internet sleuths (myself included) have put together the various pieces of the puzzle and figured out that the startup in question is Likealittle, a YC-backed “flirting-facilitator platform” launched  by former Googlers and Microsofties Evan Reas, Prasanna Sankaranarayanan and Shubham Mittal on October 27th. I’ve also verified this with a source close to the matter.
The original Hacker News thread grabbed our attention with following impressive growth statistic “In just 6 weeks since launch, we have over 20M pageviews (now over 1M a day and growing fast) and hundreds of thousands of daily uniques. Our virality index is higher than Facebook’s in their fastest growth stage.” While Likealittle’s “virality index” claim might be a little hard to prove, hundreds of thousands of daily uniques is formidable, adding up to likely over one million monthly uniques in my estimate.
A Craigslist “Missed Connections” for the college set, Likealittle works by letting you post flirty descriptions and comments anonymously or login to start an account. I’m thinking the anonymous element is why the pageviews are so high and why the HN post didn’t focus on unique users. What keeps people keep coming back to Likealittle is the compulsion to check the discussion around their updates and comments as well as check whether or not someone has mentioned somebody that looks like them.
The advantages to having a Likealittle account over being anonymous include being able to follow a certain location, like a dorm, library or a class that you’re in and keep track of what you’re following. Users can also send and receive messages and take down any comments or updates they feel are abusive just by confirming their school email address. To keep up the positive environment, all randomly generated usernames are fruit-based like “Apple” or “Pomegranate.”
When I emailed the relentlesshackers@gmail.com email address associated with the original HN post it wasn’t very helpful, responding “Trying to be stealthy for the moment.” But founders Reas, Sankaranarayanan and Mittal have given multiple in-depth interviews to a campus publications and it seems like avoiding the tech press is just another part of the viral campus infiltration strategy.
Reas recently told The Stanford Review that he hopes Likealittle “Can be a huge business, can change the world, and affect a lot of people at the same time.” Hmm … Kind of reminds me of another social network that blew up on campus.

YouTube Launches Trends Page to Highlight Popular Videos

With YouTube now seeing 35 hours of video uploaded every minute, it can be hard to wade through to the good stuff. Luckily, YouTube has just launched a “Trends” page that shows the most popular videos and topics being shared on the site and off.
YouTube Trends is basically an analytics hub for the video-sharing site, featuring feeds showing trending videos (videos that are both popular on YouTube and embedded on several other sites) and trending topics (generated via common metadata); a feature called “4 at 4″ that presents four buzzed-about vids twice a day, a Know Your Meme-esque blog to analyze said vids and a dashboard that breaks down popular videos by demographics (location, age, gender, etc).
We think this site will be a boon to both journalists and marketers, as it will give an interesting view of the current cultural ethos.
Users are already able to check out popular videos daily via the site itself, but this page should make it much easier to navigate through the masses of content.

Cleaning Kitchens: Deep Clean Your Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sinks are one of the dirtiest spots in the house. Here's how to wipe away the germs and shine up your sink.

I recently heard that the average kitchen sink carries more germs than the average home toilet. Think about that the next time you go to rinse off your fruits and veggies or leave your favorite mug soaking in the sink.

A simple rinse or cleaner-spritz of the sink doesn't cut it when it comes to annihilating stubborn germs living in your kitchen. But there are some relatively easy solutions to get your sink ready for food prep or a baby's bath. There are different techniques depending on the type of your sink, so read on to get your cleaning routine moving.

Stainless Steel Sinks
If you have a stainless steel sink, you should always be sure to rinse your sink thoroughly after each use. Acids and salts have the potential to damage the finish of stainless steel, so it's important to avoid leaving such foods in the sink.

Mild soap and a nylon sponge suffice for daily cleaning. An all-purpose cleaner or a glass cleaner can be used to clean the sink as well. To prevent soap scum, you should always rinse the sink clean after using a cleaner or soap and then dry with a soft cloth.

A common problem with stainless steel are spots. Wipe this problem away with a clean cloth soaked in vinegar. To trouble spot stubborn stains, try wetting the surface of the sink and sprinkling liberally with baking soda; use a nylon scrubbing sponge to work the baking soda in, then rinse thoroughly. And to keep the finish of the sink at its finest, avoid using any of the following when cleaning the surface: bleach, ammonia and abrasive cleaners (including abrasive sponges and wool steel pads, as they tend to damage the finish).

Never use a chlorine solution in stainless steel sinks, say experts at Kohler. If one does hit the surface, rinse immediately to avoid corrosion. For general cleaning, Kohler recommends these products: Fantastik Antibacterial Heavy Duty, Formula 409 Antibacterial All Purpose and Formula 409 Glass & Surface.

Cast Iron Sinks
Just like their stainless steel counterparts, cast iron sinks should be thoroughly rinsed after each use. But for an added touch, thoroughly dry the entire basin with a clean cloth. For a deeper cleaning, follow the same baking-soda technique as above: wet the entire surface, sprinkle baking soda liberally to cover, scrub the powder onto the sink with a clean nylon sponge and rinse well.

Steer clear of abrasive cleaners. And if you really want to avoid stains, avoid placing items in the sink that will cause them (duh!) such as tea bags, coffee grinds or cans.

For store-bought options, the experts at Kohler recommend the following for cast iron sink:
Fantastik Antibacterial Heavy Duty
Formula 409 Antibacterial All Purpose
Windex Original

For rust removal:
Bon Ami
Super Iron Out Rust Stain Remover
Bar Keepers Friend

Ceramic Sinks
When it comes to cleaning a ceramic sink, opt for a cleanser in a gel or creamy-solution form; these help avoid scratches. Never use abrasive cleaners. If you have some tough stains to remove, instead opt for a solution of one part liquid chlorine bleach to sixteen parts water. (This is also useful for tough stains on cast iron sinks, but do not use it on stainless steel sinks!) You can also try a solution of undiluted white vinegar: apply with a clean cloth around the entire basin, then rinse.

Kohler advises you to add any of these to your shopping list for ceramic-sink cleanings:
Fantastik Antibacterial Heavy Duty
Formula 409 Antibacterial All Purpose
Soft Scrub Lemon Cleanser
Windex Original

For rust removal:
Bon Ami
Super Iron Out Rust Stain Remover
Bar Keepers Friend

Faucets and Handles
Finger prints and smudges on our sink hardware is a fairly common -- and pesky -- problem. Solve it by wiping them down with a clean cloth soaked in white vinegar. The vinegar also helps to sanitize the area, further ridding you of those stubborn germs!

23 Free, Web-Based Tools SMBs Are Asking for Now

Small Business Image
In an informal Twitter poll, we asked our friends working at or running small and medium-sized businesses not what they could do for the Internet, but what the Internet could do for them.
We heard responses that ranged widely, running the gamut from social media marketing tools to internal team communications. Here’s a list of great resources for SMBs that meet some of the most pressing needs you experience as a business owner or entrepreneur.
Best of all, every single one of these tools can be used free of charge (some have paid options for larger businesses or for those that need more features). And all of them are web-based; that means you won’t have to install software, worry about cross-platform compatibility, take up any of your own system’s resources or have to leave work when you leave your own PC.
If you have other tools you love using that you think other SMBs could benefit from, please let us know about them in the comments.

2 Internal Chat Tools

When you want to get your employees or clients together to brainstorm, make decisions or simply run your business, instant messaging can be a huge time-saver — especially if you’re working with a distributed team or out-of-town clients and vendors. While we love programs like SkypeSkype for business chat and conference calls, it may not be installed on every machine you have to use. These web-based group chat programs solve that problem.
Zoho’s web-based chat client allows you to create and chat with groups. You can easily share your desktop with co-workers, and you can integrate your calendar for quick appointment or meeting scheduling. Best of all, Zoho’s IM service also supports all kinds of IM clients, including Yahoo and AIMaim.
Another good online group chat service is Gixaw. With this service, you can create a unique URL for chatting with your group. You can share files, create multiple “rooms” for different projects or departments, and even search through chat history.

2 Task Management Tools

As your business and number of employees grow, you may need a central place for delegating tasks, monitoring progress and ensuring everything gets done correctly and on time.
HiTask is a free, web-based task management tool perfect for SMBs. It has a user-friendly, easy interface for your to-do lists and for team or project management. With HiTask, you can work on recurring events, make assignments, sort tasks based on priority and more, all within a simple drag-and-drop UI.
Another great task management tool is RememberTheMilk. Don’t be fooled by its homemaker-ish name. This web app has been widely acclaimed over the past several years, and it works for individuals as well as small teams. RTM integrates with Gmail and Outlook, and the service has mobile apps for Windows,Android, iPhone and BlackBerry.

8 Social Media Marketing and Monitoring Tools

One of the categories SMBs ask for the most help with is social media. You need to quickly and easily keep an eye on what people are saying about you; more importantly, you need to participate in the social media conversation yourself, without drowning hours upon endless hours bouncing around various websites.
There are three great tools we’d recommend for pushing out updates to a variety of sites at once. All three have free, web-based services, and they’re great for working with teams, too. Depending on your specific needs and tastes, you could try out Hootsuite, Seesmic and TweetDeck.
If you want to see what people are saying about your company, your product, your location or your vertical in real time, try searching for relevant terms on Collecta or SocialMention.
You also have options for network-specific monitoring tools. To see how your tweets are performing, tryCrowdBooster. And remember, Twitter’s official analytics product is coming soon, too. For Facebook, use that social network’s Insights dashboard for your business’s Facebook Page.

3 Bookkeeping Tools

When it comes to keeping your finances straight, there are also several free, online tools just right for SMBs.
You can try Numia.biz, accounting software made just for recording and processing small business transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank balances and more. It also gives you forms for invoicing, purchases and bank reconciliation and allows you to set up customers and vendors.
The desktop version of QuickBooks is a standard feature of many SMBs. This web-based version of QuickBooks is free and perfect for the new or smaller business. You can use QuickBooks Online to create invoices, pay bills, track expenses and more.
Finally, MoneyTrackin’ is a free web app for simply and quickly tracking your revenue and expenses. You can also share budgets and collaborate with many people together on the same account. MoneyTrackin’ lets you control as many accounts as you need to and tag your transactions; the service is also available as a handy mobile web app.

5 Cloud-Based File Hosting Tools

For sharing and storing large files, Google Docs will allow you to share a wide range of files — including PDFs, spreadsheets, images and much more — free of charge for the first 1024 MB. And believe us, it can take quite a while to get to 1024 MB of content. Google Docs files are easy to keep private and easy to share with others, including clients and team members. Plus, you’ll have a relatively stable company on your side, which isn’t necessarily the case when the startup hosting your files gets bought by Facebook and shuts its doors, for example.
However, if you’d rather go the small-web-company route, there are lots of options for moving large files around the Internet.
If you just need to e-mail a large file to another person, try YouSendIt, which lets you e-mail a link for downloading files up to 2 GB. If you’d like to permanently or semi-permanently store rather than just e-mail your files, you could try Esploded, which lets you create a free account, upload your files and create groups for sharing files. There’s also Dropbox, FilesAnywhere and Box.net, all of which offer free and paid memberships, just depending on your business’s size and needs.

3 Hiring and Applicant-Tracking Tools

Last of all, as you grow, finding and hiring great new staff members becomes increasingly important and requires more of your attention — and likely greater organization.
Zoho Recruit is free for one person to use. It lets you schedule interviews, add and manage candidates, store resumes and publish job openings from within a simple but robust dashboard.
SmartRecruiters is hiring software that helps users create job ads and post them all over the web, including major job boards and social networks. You can consolidate all your applicants in one place, prescreen them online, share the best candidates with your co-workers or executives, schedule interviews and even rate the candidates all from within the app.
iKrut is an interesting free recruitment system. You can build your own recruitment microsite quickly; from there, you can list all your current job openings on this new career portal. Candidates visit the microsite to upload their résumés and cover letters for you to review. This all also allows for interview scheduling and organizing references. Microsites can be branded to match your own website, and the system has built-in messaging.

Prince Harry: Kate Middleton Is the Sister I Always Wanted

(Dec. 17) -- As his brother's engagement to Kate Middleton captures headlines around the world, Prince Harry says he couldn't be happier about his royal sister-in-law-to-be.

"I have known Kate for years and it's great that she is now becoming part of the family," he told the German newspaper Bild, according to the Evening Standard of London. "I always wished for a sister and now I have one."

Harry, 26, said he was "enormously pleased that [his brother] finally popped the question,"according to The Telegraph.

Prince Harry, seen here in November, said he is "enormously pleased" that his brother and Kate Middleton finally got engaged.

Harry is in Germany to accept an award for his charity work in Lesotho. In 2006, Harry and Lesotho's Prince Seeiso founded the charity Sentebale to help children in the African country.

The redhaired prince told reporters he hopes his mother, Princess Diana, who was renowned for her support for charities around the world, would be proud of him.

"I always think of my mother in everything I do. I hope she would be proud of my work. My brother and I often ask ourselves: what would our mother have done in this situation?" Prince Harry told reporters, according to The Telegraph. "That helps us again and again."

Harry also praised his father, Prince Charles, for his long history of charity work. "But I learned also enormously from my father who has been engaged with numerous charities for decades."

Harry, who was 12 years old when his mother was killed in a 1997 car accident, said she continues to serve as an example to him.

"My mother was to me, like my brother, a role model. And also to many people worldwide," he said. "Exactly like her, I know that I enjoy a privileged position as a member of the royal family and I must use what was given to me to try to make a difference in important topics."

Gwyneth Paltrow dares to bare in backless dress at 'Country Strong' premiere

Gwyneth Paltrow played it safe in the front and sexy in the back at a 'Country Strong' screening.
Gwyneth Paltrow played it safe in the front and sexy in the back at a 'Country Strong' screening.
From the front, Gwyneth Paltrow couldn't have looked more conservative at the "Country Strong" premiere in Los Angeles Tuesday.

The 38-year-old's white dress had a high neckline, low hemline and featured long sleeves.

But the actress wasn't being completely demure.

The Emilio Pucci gown was actually backless, with a slit on the left side that extended all the way to the floor.

The only thing holding the custom-made dress together?

A string of fabric in a lattice pattern, criss-crossing down to Paltrow's thigh.

The side view also revealed that Paltrow, a mom of two, was wearing sexy black stilettos, which had straps reminiscent of the dress' criss-cross.

Paltrow may be country strong, but she knew to show off a different strength as she posed for photographers: her rocking body.

iPad owners: Don't forget to add these accessories to your holiday list

iHome iA100 docking station gives you plenty of versatility for under $200.
iHome iA100 docking station gives you plenty of versatility for under $200.

Forget Barbie dolls and Transformers, the iPad is the apple of everyone's holiday eye.
How much? A Nielsen study in November revealed that 31% of children between the ages of six and 12 wanted Apple's big-screen gizmo for Christmas.
That mass appeal has generated another option for gifts, too: The iPad accessory. The iPad is great by itself, but a plethora of additions improve its functionality, protect its LED screen and make it even more fun.
Here's a look at a few things you can pick up for the iPad-phile on your Christmas list this year:
iHome iA100 docking station - $199.99
The market is flooded with iPod and iTouch clock/radio docks, but finding an option that accommodates the iPad's large size isn't as easy. Enter the iA100, which is perhaps the most versatile of the handful of tabletop clock/radio docks that do play nicely with the iPad.
iHome packs this top-tier offering with a solid Bluetooth calling feature that works with everything from Blackberries to Android phones to iPhones. The iA100 also belts out solid sound for such a tiny unit (it weighs less than four pounds). The bass won't exactly set your walls thumping, but sound fills a room without ever sounding tinny. An FM radio is included as well, and the iHome+iSleep app allows you to program the device wirelessly from your iPad.
We'd have liked to see a slightly better remote that could handle music better (you can't switch albums) during playback), but that's a minor quibble in one of the top docks available for the iPad.
Apple Bluetooth wireless keyboard - $69.99
The iPad's touch screen works well for typing short emails, web surfing and typing notes, but for truly intense data entry, a keyboard is a must. Apple makes a first-party keyboard dock, and a bevy of other companies have also attempted to address this shortcoming.
But the best, most versatile option is Apple's Bluetooth wireless keyboard. While Apple's keyboard dock forces you to operate in portrait mode, the wireless keyboard allows you to work in portrait or landscape, nearly making the iPad a viable alternative to a laptop. It sacrifices a few iPad-specific hotkeys, but the tradeoff of working in landscape is worthwhile.
Best part: It feels comfortable and easy to type on.

Pick up a Speck sleeve or skin to protect your beloved iPad.
iPad cases - prices vary
After shelling the $499 or so to get an iPad, the last thing anyone wants is to see it get scratched or dinged. Good thing a plethora of cases are available, all of which protect the iPad to varying degrees. Speck products (www.speckproducts.com) makes a variety of sleeves and skins. The best of these is the Pixelskin, a $39.95 skin that makes the iPad feel less cold and metal and more warm and fuzzy.
For the professional, check out the wide array of folios. Speck's Dustjacket ($49.95) is one of the top options, although the best is Apple's own iPad case, a $43.99 offering that's so skinny it makes the iPad look like a classy notebook.
Games - prices vary
What fun is an iPad without games and apps? So stash an iTunes gift card in somebody's stocking so they can check out the growing library of iPad games in the apps store.
Last month's iPad gaming roundup introduced a handful of top options: Trucks & Skulls, an Angry Birds-inspired monster truck game; Rage HD, a fine, albeit shallow first-person shooter; and Defender Chronicles HD. And a few other games have drawn attention this month.
EA Games followed up its "Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit" console offering with a solid HD iPad version for $9.99, and "Star Battalion HD" is a graphically ambitious space shooter game, although the controls take some getting used to. Another interesting release: "Neo Defender 2 HD," which seems like a take on "Geometry Wars," using both fingers to fire at glowing neon enemies.
